Abstract
Dissociative Disorders are some of the most overlooked and misunderstood conditions in mental health, often leaving these highly-traumatized individuals misdiagnosed and without proper treatment. In fact, according to the DSM, the prevalence of Dissociative Identity Disorder is greater than some of the more well-known presentations, such as dysthymia, schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder, and about the same as OCD; yet, many clinicians believe dissociative disorders to be extremely rare. This workshop will explore the relationship between trauma and dissociation, review the latest research on its origins, and examine the spectrum of dissociative disorders and their symptoms.
Designed for clinicians, students, and anyone interested in mental health, this workshop will examine why these disorders are so frequently underdiagnosed, dispel common myths, and discuss practical approaches for assessment and treatment. Whether you're looking to deepen your clinical skills or simply gain a clearer understanding of trauma-related dissociation, this workshop will provide valuable insights and practical knowledge. Join us as we break the stigma, bridge the gaps in awareness, and move toward more accurate diagnosis and compassionate care!
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to explain the relationship between trauma and dissociation and how dissociation may serve as a protective and adaptive coping strategy for trauma.
- Participants will be able to identify assessment tools that are used to screen for and aid in diagnosing dissociative disorders.
- Participants will be able to explain the Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality and how trauma can leave some clients feeling fragmented.
- Participants will be able to apply evidence-based, trauma-informed, practical strategies and treatment approaches with clients with dissociation.
