Abstract
This chapter seeks to understand the meanings that Latinas today construct about gender and gender roles. We interviewed 10 Latinas living in the United States, using the data analytic procedures outlined in Chapter 1. Participants were residents of either New York City or California, where the authors reside. A core narrative of how Latinas experience and understand gender and gender roles emerged from our analyses, Latinas in the process of transformation and negotiating roles, and encompassed three key themes: (a) Latina socialization, (b) identity constructs, and (c) from internalized ideals to one's own values.
