Abstract

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has become an essential aspect of the economy of the Bay Area. Through capital improvement projects, they have been able to adapt to the growth and demands of the community. To conduct my research, I looked at existing statistics and information on SFO’s website and the FAA. This information included the 5-year Capital Plan, the 2019 Economic Impact Study of San Francisco International Airport, the Annual Operating Budget, and Air Traffic Statistics. By analyzing the data, I found that SFO has a 72.7 billion-dollar impact on the total revenue in the Bay Area. This includes direct, indirect, and induced airport-generated impact and jobs. There have been various capital improvement plans in place to increase the airport’s capacity, efficiency, and sustainability. The airport has focused their capital improvement projects on becoming carbon neutral and LEED certified. In conclusion, the San Francisco International Airport is vital as it provides a gateway for people to access the San Francisco area. The airport has grown substantially through capital improvement projects, which has allowed the airport to operate efficiently, host a larger capacity, and focus on becoming carbon neutral. The airport has a substantial economic impact on the local area as its direct, indirect, and induced impact generates revenue and jobs throughout the community. Overall, the San Francisco International Airport is essential to the economy of the Bay Area as it provides transportation, tourism, jobs, wealth, and continues to grow to fit the needs of the Bay Area.
