Watson Scholars James Okina and Isaac King are co-founders of No Existe. No Existe is Spanish for doesn’t exist, which refers to the reality of street children in society today. Although children are the most vulnerable population in society, street children are, more often than not, ignored and resigned to fate. To the average person these children do not exist, they are invisible, lost within the system.
In February 2019, Okina and King set up a GoFundMe to raise money for their research trip to the Dominican Republic. Here is a snapshot of their progress and an invitation to support their upcoming journey to Brazil.
The No Existe project, led by Dr. Wayne Law, won 8th place in the "Map the System" competition at Oxford University in June 2019.
The “Map the System” competition takes a systems-based and ecosystems approach to social and environmental concerns. It challenges students to think outside of the classroom through issues and research, emphasizing visual, written, and oral presentations.
