Abstract

In many ways, given his upbringing and limited education, Harry Truman would seem to be an unlikely champion for the new, fledgling state of Israel. Yet, he would emerge as a great champion both for statehood in 1948 and issues of importance to the larger Jewish diaspora. Truman would play a key role in the post-Holocaust, post-war years on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people.

This talk, based on extensive research in the Truman archives and in-depth interviews with former Truman aides and Israeli officials, will explore the behind-the-scenes challenges, decisions, and relationships, and will offer an entertaining and informative look at this inspiring story.
