Abstract

Historically, media depictions of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been narrow and stripped of realistic nuance. Depictions are overwhelmingly white and male, hyper-specialized savants so even with effort and diligence, therapists are not immune to internalizing the societal portrayal of autism (Maddox et al., 2020).This leaves little understanding for the teen and adult, black, brown, and queer autistics who are often left in the margins of our manuscripts and clinical practice (Strauss et al., 2021; Eilenberg et al., 2019). In this session, the presenters will explore the latest trends in the autistic community, techniques for improving treatment outcomes for autistic adults and common comorbidities, managing expectations during the progression of treatment, and advocacy strategies that promote autistic-affirming clinical spaces.
