Abstract

Robert Watson, distinguished professor of American history, was selected as one of the raters in the upcoming poll to rank the presidents by the Siena Research Institute in New York. This is Siena’s 7th Presidential Expert Poll: 1982 - 2022

Beginning one year after a new President takes office, the survey, conducted since 1982, ranks all 44 Presidents in 20 different categories, and provides an overall ranking of best to worst according to historians, political scientists and presidential scholars.

Experts rank the attributes, abilities, and accomplishments of each President. Additionally, this year, scholars name which of the 44 unique U.S. Presidents they wish could be in office today to address the most challenging issues of our day, indicate which President had the best and worst first year, and among Presidents in office since 1968 say whether history will ultimately decide whether they moved the country on the right track or in the wrong direction on key aspects of leading our country. Always cited as one of the most respected and influential expert presidential rankings, the SCRI Survey of U.S. Presidents has been conducted in 1982, 1990, 1994, 2002, 2010, 2018 and now 2022.

Previous SCRI surveys of U.S. Presidents have been reported in Presidential Studies Quarterly, The New York Times, Washington Post, recent scholarly reviews of the presidents, and national news networks.
