Abstract

According to the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Programs (CACREP), our admissions process should consider applicant career goals, aptitude for graduate level work in the delivery mode, and potential success for forming relationships with diverse populations (CACREP, 2023). We know that many of the long-standing practices in admissions, including forms of quantitative and qualitative assessments, have limitations in effectively examining the most “critical skills” applicants will need (Gray, 2015). Models for holistic admissions reviews (HAR), defined as the integration of applicant experiences and materials into the admissions process to strive for equity; have been proposed specifically for medical training and counseling programs (Hammonds & Purgason, 2022; Kent & McCarthy, 2016; Orlando, 2021; American Association of Medical Colleges, 2014). For example, there are recommendations around replacing interviews with audition-based selection processes and other innovative measures which will be discussed in this session (Vecchi et al., 2021; Elder, 2018). This session will present a pilot HAR process at a CACREP accredited institution. Finally, we will present strategies for integrating diversity and social justice values at the admissions level in an ever-changing cultural and technical landscape where machine learning and artificial intelligence are at the helm of learning."
