The second movement of this work began an exercise written in spring 1985 for a composition/theory seminar taught by Peter Maxwell Davies at Harvard University where the composer was a graduate student. It was revised into its present form in 1989. The composer always hoped to add other movements to this piece, and a number of years later, finally realized his plans in 2011.

This work was commissioned by the Conservatory of Music at Lynn University for the 6th Annual New Music Festival. It was premiered in 2012. The full score is displayed with permission by the composer.
